Mansour El-Matbouli is a Fish Health Professor and Head of the Clinical Division of Fish Medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria. His research focuses on Emerging and Re-emerging Fish Diseases caused by virus, bacteria, parasite and fungi. His team has been developing novel approaches to investigate the interactions between pathogens and their hosts on cellular, organismal and molecular level. Basic understanding of pathogens and host will enable researchers to better understanding of infectious diseases and to develop control tools and improve vaccines for bacterial, viral, and parasitic diseases of fish. Our mission is to provide sustainable state of the art training, education, clinical, diagnostic and establishment of research programs for fish in order to support and maintain food security. Main part of the service and research of his team has been diagnostic and treatment of ornamental fish. The Academic Goals of his work include: 1) Education of veterinarians, veterinary medical students and graduate students 2) to provide diagnostic services and to develop new technology and methodology necessary for evaluation and controlling fish health 3) to generate science-based information for use in the management and protection of fish and other aquatic animals. Currently, research topics of his team include RNA interference as a potential approach to understand gene functions and control spring viraemia of carp (SVC) and Cyprinid herpesvirus-3 (CyHV-3), the most serious viral infection of cyprinid fish and Myxobolus cerebralis, the causative agent of whirling disease (WD) as well as Site-specific genome editing using CRISPR/Cas9 system. Further topics are Applications of Nano Technology in Fish medicine, transmission of Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae and Characterization of genes responsible for sporogenesis in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and brown trout (Salmo trutta). Topics of extensive research are, application of in vivo induced antigen technology (IVIAT) for identification of genes uniquely expressed during infection with Aeromonas salmonicida, the causative agent of furunculosis in fish; proteomics of rainbow trout in response to Yersinia ruckeri, the causative agent of enteric red mouth disease; impact of co-infection on fish; impact of climate change on aquaculture, wild fish fishery and the entire ecosystem.
